Sperm Selection Techniques (PICSI/MACS/IMSI/Microfluidics)

WHAT ARE SPERM SELECTION TECHNIQUES

Sperm Selection Techniques are advanced laboratory methods used to select the healthiest and most functionally competent sperm for fertilization during IVF/ICSI. These methods help improve fertilization rates, embryo quality, and overall pregnancy outcomes.

At Freya Fertility, we use clinically proven sperm selection techniques to enhance success rates, especially in cases of male infertility or repeated IVF failures.

These techniques are beneficial for patients who:

  • Have poor sperm quality or high DNA fragmentation
  • Have repeated IVF or ICSI failures
  • Have recurrent implantation failure
  • Have unexplained infertility
  • Want better embryo quality and success rates

WHAT ARE ADVANCED SPERM SELECTION METHODS?

These are specialized techniques that allow embryologists to select sperm based on maturity, DNA integrity, and functionality—ensuring that only the best sperm are used for fertilization.

Initial Evaluation & Semen Analysis

A detailed semen analysis is performed to assess sperm count, motility, morphology, and DNA quality.

PICSI (Physiological Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

PICSI is a method of selecting the best possible sperm for fertilization before injection into the egg in the IVF protocol. Sperm are placed in the PICSI dish containing samples of hyaluronon (A naturally occurring biopolymer found in all human cells) hyelogel.

MACS (Magnetic Activated Cell Sorting)

MACS is a technique that allows sperm with the characterstic to be selected, eliminating those destined to die without achieving fertilization and choosing the healthiest ones, which in creases the possibility of pregnancy.

The MACS process involves the use of very small biodegradable magnetic particles. These particles have an antibody known as protein annexine. The antibody fastens itself to sperm with high DNA fragmentation, that are more likely to undergo apoptosis or programmed cell death. The sperm sample is then passed through a column with weak magnetic fields around it. The apoptotic sperm g drawn towards the walls while the healthy ones pass through the channel.

MICROFLUIDICS

Microfluidic technique is used for sperm quantification, sperm quality and sperm sorting getting the best yield of sperm, without damaging the sperms and without causing DNA fragmentation. These sperms which are then used for IUI, IVF or ICSI. It is very useful for cases in which the semen sample has poor semen parameters and helps in improving the outcomes.

IMSI (Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection)

Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected is a technique used in IVF treatment to examin and select sperm using a high magnification digital imaging microscope for microinjection into the oocytes.

Fertilization via ICSI

Selected high-quality sperm are used for fertilization through ICSI.

Embryo Development & Transfer

Healthy embryos are developed and transferred into the uterus.
